“Melty Love”, by Shazna is our latest Song of the Week.  Shazna debuted in 1993 and at that time they were a little unusual, due to their leader singer`s cross-dressing fashion.  These guys were very much a visual kei rock band.  Visual kei being lots of makeup, elaborate hairstyles and very flamboyant fashion.  I often think of it as something similar to glam rock when people like David Bowie, Gary Glitter and T. Rex were at their biggest in the 1970s.

I really have mixed memories about this song and the band.  When the song was released I often thought Shazna was just another group heavily influenced by Culture Club.  Their lead singer, Izam took Boy George`s fashion to an extreme, as you can see in the video.  And some people might be forgiven for thinking he was a girl, if it was their first time to see the clip.  Shzana definitely provided some excitement at the time and had a huge female following in the mid-1990s.

In 1999 Izam (who was about 27 at the time) married the intensely popular idol Hinano Yoshida who was only 20.  I think it was a bad career move for both of them as the marriage only lasted two months.  At the time it was quite the scandal.  But then again Japan in the nineties, for me anyway, was extremely exciting and their relationship was just part of the atmosphere.

“Melty Love”, by Shazna was released on August 27, 1997 and reached the number two spot on the Oricon charts.
